At a lounge in Park City Utah last monday night I saw a film that played outside of of the festival that I absolutely loved. "President" is a comedy about American Presidential politics that argues that Decmocacy is in peril in the United States, challeneged by corporate greed. Its best when it discusess the decimation of liberalism by the republicans...but that becuase of this war. liberalism, first seriously brought on by Howard Dean and now by Barack Obama and making its way back into the campaign of Hillary Clinton....is back. But its up against corporate greed and the emergence of the south as a solid Republican Block. Interviews with Dixie Rising author Peter Applebome underscore the rise of the South as solidly Republican...not single state went democrat in 2000 or 2004, and that is a huge concern this time around. Milon Henry Levine is very funy in his interchanges with Chritopher Hitchens, and there are cast members in this film, some fictional stuff: actress and musician Olivia Maxwell, who is now based here in Ireland, is great as a reality show dingbat kind of faux political journalist, and Flo Lunn is funny and charming as the" White House Cuisine Corresondent." Steve Bucemi has probably his shortest role ever in a movie...but it may be his most poignant...he may not know yet that he is in "President. " He should...he's great in it...for about 2-3 seconds. The film is coming to Dublin in the spring..and the dvd should be out any day now. Pick it up...its a lot of fun.
